Ice Fishing – Detecting the Bite Quick Tips

Lake Trout caught on GSO Premium Big Game Head (green)One of the hardest things to learn in any type of fishing is knowing when a fish has taken your lure or bait. Here’s a couple of quick tips to help with bite detection for kids and beginners while ice fishing

  1. Use a heavier jig head or weight. This will help keep your line tight, help your lure get to the bottom faster, and make it more obvious when the lure lands on the bottom. The heavier weight will create tighter line contact with the lure, bite detection will be easier, and will also reduce coils and tangles as the lure drops down.
  2. Use a rod tip mounted strike indicator or a slip bobber. This will help give a visual clue to know when a bite happens.
